Laurent Garnier, Ladies & Gentlemen, is into ballet. Seriously. Well, not to the extent that his next record cover will depict him in a tutu or a strangely bulging liotard, but the man has been very busy composing music for the French choreographer Angelin Preljocaj (if you can get your tongue out of a knot in less than five minutes after pronouncing it, we'll send you some band stickers). Angelin Preljocaj is THE foremost contemporary choreographer in France and the piece that will feature Laurent's music will be performed at no less than the Bolchoi Theater and by - no way! Yes: way! - dancers from the Bolchoi Theatre. Or in the series 'How to beatmix Swan Lake' this is episode 1 and there will be many to follow. The piece will premiere in Moscow on September 14th, in France at Theatre De Chaillot on Octobre 1st, will then hit the slightly superb Royal Opera at the Chateau de Versailles and will continue to be performed all over Europe. And so it came to pass that Moses came down from the hill, two stone tablets in his hands. At the foot of the hill he found his followers, a crowd of 2000 men and women strong, sitting and waiting for his answers and the word of God. Upon seeing them thus a godlike fury was born into him. "Lo! Lo and Behold!", he cried: "What Gomorra is this! Of heathen's blood made art thou all, for none amongst you I find boogying! You have forsaken your Lord who demands no more than a simple shaking of the rumps". Upon this he smote the tablets down and broke them (in a display of violence quite inapropriate for one of the clergy, but then again: isn't that how we know the clergy to be). God in Heaven saw this scene and sent out his favourite pigeon to bring Moses several new tablets, black, round, flat and 12inches in diameter this time. With these new tools of religion, he split the sea and led his crowd to the Bataclan where they went forth and partied and collectively went bananas. Imagine this, if you will: Paris, a distant and lonely quartier, sometime at an unspecified and ghostly hour of the night. You're at a crossroads and all traffic lights, dangling slightly in the wind, are set to green. From the North an engine roars and a GTO full of old skool beats approaches fast! From the South, a Citroën DS full of Zen Vibes does the same. The East and West: massive dance and ecclectic trance. The inevitable collision happens, right in front of your very ears and the Hot Rod that you, you incurable Kleptomaniac, build from the debris ... well, that's what the new Laurent Garnier sounds like! NYE 2009 will not only be the massive party that The End in London generally organizes, but this one will go down in history because it's set to be The End's final bash after 13 years at the forefront of London's electronic music scene.
Laurent Garnier has been one of the club's resident DJs since the very beginning, so it only seems fit that he and Layo (half of Layo & Bushwacka!), wanted to play this very special last New Year's Eve together at the club...
